“Let me ask you two simple questions.” Dr.Jordan Shlain is known for slicing deep to the truth, and he likes to challenge people with two questions: “Would you like to be less healthy, the same, or more healthy in two years?” When everyone inevitably says “more,” then comes the next question: “Great. What’s your strategy for that?”
Schlain is known as a fierce advocate for truth in medicine and getting people to rethink their life and medical choices.
“Twenty percent of your lifespan is determined by genetics, which means that eighty is determined by lifestyle. You’ve got to make smart choices, but so much of what people read is filtered through many layers of interpreters. You have to get down to the actual science. Huberman and Attia, they do a great job, but most information is just shit.”

He warns, for example, against taking drugs or supplements simply because your friends say they are great. “Always get the scientific articles, make sure there are multiple studies — not just one — and know the risks of everything. You want not just effective, but also safe.”
YOU'VE GOT TO BE PROACTIVE
Shlain’s research is up-to-the-minute. “I have an army of experts who are not tied into pharma and we work hard to identify what is real and what is not. My lens is ‘I don’t trust anybody.’ My job is to keep people healthy before they get sick. I can see the ditch coming a mile away. Call me a ditch protector. If you’re panicking and calling an expert to treat a crisis, you’re too late. You’ve got to be proactive. You’ve got to do the tests ahead of time.
In a recent appearance at METAL, Schlain emphasized that “emerging technology is creating a new standard of predictive health. If your strategy is ‘I eat well, exercise, I'm a pescatarian, I wear an Oura ring… .’ these are all tactics but they don't ladder up to a holistic strategy of prevention. You have to know what's going on inside your body.”
Surprisingly to most, the solution, he says, is not imaging.
WHAT'S HAPPENING ON THE MOLECULAR LEVEL?
“Imaging makes people freak out about natural variations in your body. It’s a gimmick. The real answer is what’s happening on the molecular level, and you learn that from three things: blood, breath and urine. Once you have a molecular understanding and a reason to check on something, then go and get the imaging.
How comprehensive is the new technology? “Now, with a single blood test, you can know if you have any of multiple cancers super early. You can't prevent cancer, but you can prevent it from killing you by catching it early. Prostate or colon, breast or cervix cancer, skin [cancer]: now we have blood tests that check for all that early. The days of your doctor’s finger up your butt are over.”
THE VELOCITY OF AGING
New tech can also show you the velocity of aging of your body, organ by organ. “It doesn't tell you the exact age, but it tells you the velocity of aging of all your major organs and 18 biological clocks. And once you know what’s up, you can modify it. Sleep apnea, cocaine, alcohol, for example — they age your brain.”
At Shlain’s company, Velocity Health, they are building their own biobank: a library of data which their proprietary AI tracks and learns from the more data it is fed.
“Another test,” Shlain says, “funded by Ray Dalio, allows us to track plaque growth, stabilization, and danger in coronary arteries. You can literally track progressive buildup and its reversal when you take the right steps.”
There is new AI to test brain health and aging. “Brainkeep.ai will show you in three dimensions what your brains look like. We’re still learning what ecstasy, alcohol, cocaine, etc. will do to you and this is helping.”
Demonstration of nurture genomics.
Another test, from Nurture Genomics, shows genes in children that can lead to problems later on in life. Genes that can be modified.
“The science is coming fast and furious,” Shlain says. “Don’t put stuff in your body [if] you have no idea where it came from, what it’s compounded with, what else is in it. Don’t gamble with your health. Get tested on the molecular level.”
DON'T GAMBLE WITH YOUR HEALTH
A big problem, Shlain concluded, is that most doctors don’t know what’s happening on the cutting edge or don’t have access. “Seventy-five percent of them are owned by corporate entities that won’t pay for predictive medicine. Some concierge doctors do. I’m putting together a consortium of those doctors. Most people want to tell you what they know. I’m interested in what we don’t know… yet.”
